The team at A-G Sod Farms Fresno had the unique opportunity to take on this diverse and extensive project for Visalia Country Club in Visalia, CA. Spanning over four weeks, our team, along with the support of the course Superintendent and his crew, completed big roll installation of approaches for 18 holes and along with fraze mowing of tee boxes.
Known for its long history in the central valley and its well-maintained course, Visalia Country Club is one of the oldest in the region. In addition to its many country club amenities, the club boasts an 18-hole, par-72 golf course known for its traditional feel.
The course posed many challenges— slopes, bunkers, curves and short runs. Our skilled and experienced crews adapted swiftly. Taking their time, they maneuvered equipment, made precision cuts and beautifully executed the install. Over ten acres of TifTuf™ Hybrid Bermuda were installed using A-G’s Big Roll cuts. These cuts are ideal for large area installations like this one because they result in a smoother surface with fewer edges. In total, the approaches for all 18 holes were installed.
In addition, the project included fraze mowing of the tee boxes. Fraze mowing is like a “reset” for heavily used turf areas. The process strips the top layer of grass and build-up, removing weeds and thatch, and offers many other benefits. This gives the grass the opportunity to start anew, recovering with new growth in just a few short weeks.
Remarkably, the course remained open for play during the length of the project using temporary greens that were placed adjacent to approaches. “The team and I were excited by the opportunity to showcase our skills in tight quarters,” says A-G Sales Representative Jose Tamayo, who was directly involved in the oversight of this project. The project was completed without a hitch, and we’re happy to have been able to assist the Visalia Country Club in revitalizing their beautiful course.
